New and Old Sagiada

new_sagiadaNew Sagiada is a seaside village, opposite the town of Corfu, and is the last settlement before the Albanian-Greek borders. It was inhabited for the first time during WW2 by fugitives of the Old Sagiada village when the latter was burnt to the ground by the Germans.

Sagiada is known today for its barbecued fish "Kefalopoula" and the delicious shrimps, which can be found in local taverns at "Skaloma" beach. This place is also famous for its beautiful sunset.

palia_sagiadaThe Old Sagiada was a major port since the ancient times, mostly because of its geographical position.

However, due to two severe earthquakes, in 1823 and 1872, the town was heavily damaged. It was later completely destroyed by the Germans in 1943.
