Acheron, with a total length of 52 kilometers, is one of the most well-known rivers in the region of Epirus. It flows from the prefecture of Ioannina, with many springs up on the Tomaros mountain (1600m) next to Glyki village, towards the Ionian sea. Acheron's Delta is formed near the village Ammoudia in Preveza prefecture and it is a sight worth seeing.
In ancient times, it was believed that Acheron river was the river that god Hermes was sailing across, so as to deliver the souls of the dead to Charon who in turn would ferry them over to the kingdom of Hades. |
